We live in a world that’s always connected—and that constant connection can leave us feeling completely disconnected from what matters most. That’s why I recently did something I’d never done before: a full 72-hour technology fast. No phone, no computer, no TV, no email. Nothing.
Let me tell you—it was not easy. And that surprised me.
I’ve done fasts before. From food. From social media. Even extended ones for spiritual purposes. But this? This was the hardest fast I’ve ever done. And also the most rewarding.
Here’s what I experienced:
-
More energy and better sleep
-
A calmer nervous system—less of that wired, fight-or-flight state
-
Improved focus and fewer mental cravings
-
Deeper spiritual connection—hearing God’s voice more clearly
-
Freedom from the urge to “capture the moment” instead of living it
I didn’t realize how dependent I’d become on my phone. From checking the weather and setting reminders to capturing every “Instagram-worthy” moment, I had unknowingly let technology run too much of my life. This fast opened my eyes—and my heart.
The truth is, we often fill our souls with “small things,” as John Piper says, and we miss the great. I don’t want to miss God’s still small voice because I’m too busy refreshing my inbox or scrolling a feed. I want to be present. Fully.
If you’ve never tried a technology fast, I encourage you to try—even for 24 hours. The benefits go beyond your brain. They touch your soul.
