Sugar cravings

Written by Wendie Pett

Typically, people who crave sugar have poor fuel-burning capacity in their bodies. What they really need is minerals such as zinc and chromium. I'm not saying that this is the answer to a "no more chocolate in 2012 resolution", but it could level out the huge fluctuations in the day eliminating really high highs and very low lows. You may find these minerals at a health food store or even at some of the larger shopping centers.

Don't Skip the Stretch

Written by Wendie Pett
Flexibility is not only important for overall functionality, but it helps to assist in a more effective workout as well as prevent injuries. As we age we lose flexibility if we do not continue to stretch adequately. Make the most of your "down" time and stretch. Quite often I'll stretch my legs while reading a book or while I'm watching my favorite TV program. I tend to multi-task when I it makes sense. Flexibility improves over time so don't get frustrated if you can't touch your toes at first—stay focused and committed, it will happen! If you are looking for a leaner look then stretching should be part of your fitness routine since it helps to lengthen your muscles and give that lean, trim appearance.

Wild vs Farm Raised FIsh

Written by Wendie Pett

I recently read an article that compared wild fish to farm-raised fish. It stated that many consumers are choosing farm-raised fish over wild due to the mercury scare. I can understand the scare, but truly recognize that the farm-raised fish are not active and are being fed pellets of "filler-food" instead of the natural sources that they would feed on in the wild. This has made the farim-raised fish more fatty and they have less protein than fish from the wild. For instance, a farm-raised salmon offers 30-35 percent of it's weight as fat. Wild salmon has a 20 percent higher protein content and a 20 percent lower fat content. The farm-raised fish are also treated with vaccines and antibotics to ward off infection. With these type of facts, you have my permission to "go wild".

Listen to your body—it has it's own language!

Written by Wendie Pett

Listen to your body—it has it's own language! If you have aches or pains in a specific area when practicing an exercise (that are not the norm) then stop and move on to a different body part. It could just be that region of the body needs rest.

Shop right, shave calories!

Written by Wendie Pett

Shop right, shave calories! Become an avid label reader. Products that include the words light, natural, and healthy often don't have any of those attributes. Pay attention to the serving size, amount per serving and percentage of daily values, and vitamins along with the product ingredients.

Try to eat all of your fruits before noon. That way your body has the remainder of the day to burn off the natural sugars.

Exercise shouldn't be a temporary fad.

Written by Wendie Pett

Exercise shouldn't be a temporary fad. It should be something you do for life! The secret? A little and often! Try something as little as holding your stomach in every time you think of your spouse, your children, a friend, or a family member. Or, what if you hold your stomach in every time you pull up to a stop sign or light. Make a game of it if you wish. Before you know it, you'll keep your stomach held tight more often than not.

What you weigh on a scale isn't nearly as important as your body composition. Throw the scale away and don't obsess about the number it shows. Instead take measurements and learn your BMI (body mass index). This will give a better calculation of the amount of body fat that needs to be shed.
