Does simple living equal peace?

Written by Wendie Pett

Determined to find autumn color, we drove out to Amish country several days ago in southern Minnesota. We went to Harmony (doesn't that sound like a lovely place) and then to Lanesboro, which are both south of Rochester. We didn't find much fall color, but we did find incredible rolling hills, Amish farms, nice people and simple living. Horse drawn carriages on the main highway kept cars whizzing by and I wondered how the Amish felt in their simple bubble of life. From an onlooker's point of view, their life looks peaceful. Is it? They live off the land and do not get consumed by the cares of this world...maybe that's why it seems peaceful. BUT...I wondered if they ever felt held back because of their lack of modern transportation and technology and if the peace is only perception. I do have great respect for how they live and their importance of family, espeially since I'm not sure if I could live that way after living in the speed and comfort of the modern world. I mean, how would I get on Facebook and Twitter? Just kidding, of course. But, I do wonder how they reach others to share truth and wisdom if only staying within their immediate community. Is that selfish? OR...is it the way we are called to live? In simple community minding our own business. I tend to think otherwise. Hmmmm....food for thought - I suppose.

Accept Being Accepted

Written by Wendie Pett

Stuff happens! The “stuff” that is part of life can cause people to feel inadequate or unaccepted. Acceptance and success is shaped by the foundation of your belief. Do you believe that because you are overweight that you are not loved or accepted? Do you believe that because you have been through a divorce then you’re a failure? Do you believe that you’re unaccepted after the loss of a job? People can become duped by “feelings” and the illusion that they may bring. Acceptance is proven by the belief we choose to own. When you decide to have a superb attitude, even when “stuff happens” (and it will), then others are drawn to you and accept you no matter what circumstance you may find yourself facing.

Taking My Leap of Faith

Written by Wendie Pett

Hebrews11_1

This scripture raced through my mind as I recently cashed in a gift voucher I received to go skydiving. Many people might think that skydiving is only for adrenaline junkies or maybe for someone who doesn’t really value their life. But, for me, it’s one of those experiences that I’ve had on my “bucket list” for years. I saw skydiving as more of an illustration of taking a literal leap of faith to reflect all the faith leaps I’ve taken throughout my years. As I reflect on just a few in my life, such as natural child birth, starting my own business and a non-profit, or even reaching out to build certain relationships and partnerships, I notice that they are very different in appearance but similar in the faith behind each one. My skydiving experience was no different. My hope was to land safely, but I allowed faith to see the outcome.

Happy 4th of July

Written by Wendie Pett

People everywhere in America are celebrating our country's birthday. The day that we won our freedom from England! Many families and friends will gather, share time and love, watch fireworks, and of course…eat! Eating seems to be a big part of any holiday or celebration, which is wonderful, but can also get you off course if you allow it. I want to encourage you to have a great time without hovering over the food all day - be active instead!

Life is in Each Step of the Journey

Written by Wendie Pett

So often we worry about the outcome of the journey instead of living the journey each step at a time. Goals give our lives direction, but the steps we take in order to reach our goals is where the true personal growth appears. The goal is the end result of all the positive steps one must take to get there. I want to encourage you to appreciate the process in reaching your goal instead of only the completion. Too often we are already focused on the next goal before our first one is even reached. Every moment of every step of the way can offer insight if one just pays attention.

Hustle Bustle

Written by Wendie Pett

I would imagine that many of you are running around trying to get last minute gifts, write cards, wrap, grocery shop, bake and finalize holiday travel arrangements. In the midst of the hustle and bustle I would like to encourage you to just STOP - take a deep breath and look around you. Take the time to notice others and assist when needed, notice the beauty of the outdoors (even when it's cold), the simple smells that fill the air, the time spent with family and friends, your health, and the list goes on. These are the things to be thankful for during this time not gifts under the tree. The only real gift that is a gift all year round is the birth of Jesus. Let's remember to celebrate the true meaning this year—His birthday—and to eliminate the stress that we have put on ourselves. Jesus appreciates simplicity and believe it or not, so do others! Think back to your childhood Christmas' and what stands out the most? It's not the gifts, it's the simple traditions with family and friends that have created memories leaving lasting imprints in your heart forever. You deserve to enjoy those special moments and leave the stress behind.
